Sponge bound book belongs to flexi cover bound or flexi back sewn book, its flexi binding is a binding mode between paperback (also called perfect binding) and hardback binding (also called as case binding).

The covers are usually laminated and bound with a round-backed spine, which allows the book to lie fairly flat.  With Flexi binding, the cover is made with Artcard Board with endpapers glued to the front and back of the book like a casebound book, but it does not adopt an inner board. The text block is usually finished with a decorative head and tail-band also.

Flexi binding is a less expensive option than hardback binding, but offers a higher perceived value than a traditional paperback.
